PITTSBURGH VOYAGER RETURNS TO BEAVER COUNTY
WITH ‘COMMUNITY RIVER VENTURES’
More than 700 Beaver County school students to participate in acclaimed environmental education program in May
PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh Voyager, the not-for-profit environmental education organization that provides river-based programming and camps for school children, the general public, and charters for businesses and corporations, is bringing its popular Community River Ventures program back to Beaver County in May.
“We are looking forward to returning to Beaver County,” said Pittsburgh Voyager education director Jeffrey Jordan. “Community River Ventures" is based on the on-board school programs we present in Pittsburgh, but the community-based location makes it easier for schoolchildren in Beaver County to participate.”
More than 700 students from these area schools are participating:
Dutch Ridge Elementary School
Midland Elementary School
New Brighton Area Middle School
College Square Elementary School
Center Area Elementary School
Students in grades 5 through 8 will split their time between river studies onboard Pittsburgh Voyager’s 44-foot laboratory houseboat and landside stream studies in Brady’s Run Park. Students will consider the chemical and physical water quality indicators in area waterways, and study macro- and micro-invertebrates, birds, and native fish.
Programs for the public will also be held aboard the houseboat Thursdays in May beginning with May 12. Programs offered include "It's Alive!," a 90-minute river tour that explores many forms of life, from microscopic to big fish and birds, in and around the Beaver River. Advance reservations are required for the trips, which are appropriate for ages 7 to adult. The programs are from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. The cost is $12 per person, and discounts are available for groups of 12 or more. To register, or for more information, call 412-231-2712.
